Kempen

Kempen extends over three quarters of the province of Antwerp, with the art cities of Antwerp and Mechelen nearby. The region is ideal for a great holiday in the countryside. You will find vast forests, pearl-white sandy beaches, attractions for children and nice café terraces for their parents, with local beers galore. But there are also surprising little towns, with lots of culture, beguinages and abbeys!

Fancy some Kempen on your plate? In its many restaurants and cafés you'll find something for everyone. Make sure you try a Westmalle Trappist or a piece of delicious cheese from Postel Abbey. Divine local products, you just can't ignore them! Look out for producers labelled 'Pure Kempen': they'll spoil you with authentic Kempen delicacies, prepared with passion.

Cycling and walking in the Antwerp Kempen

Getting out and about in the Antwerp Kempen means ... wandering through the purple heather, of course, but also past those mighty castles and great forests. You can make up your own route on our walking network. Or would you rather follow one of our original footpaths?
Or perhaps you'd prefer to go by bike?
Dozens of themed bike routes - from the Strawberry Route to the Watermill Route - help you discover the loveliest parts of the Antwerp Kempen. Something unique: digital bike routes, such as the Storyteller in Mol or the Smugglers' Route in Ravels and Baarle. You can take a rest in one of the 150 bike cafés, which often have a charging station for your electric bike!

Pretty Kempen towns full of heritage

In the intimate villages and towns in the Antwerp Kempen you will find lots of great abbeys and beguinages, but also other treasures.
Don't under any circumstances miss these three:

  • Admire the breathtaking replica of the Last Supper in the abbey of Tongerlo.
  • Stroll through the beautifully restored Hoogstraten beguinage.
  • Rummage in Tessenderlo's Black Market, the largest covered market in Europe.

Unforgettable trips for kids in the Antwerp Kempen

Visit Bobbejaanland, the zoo in Olmen, the Kasterlee elven wood ... Water fun you’ll find a-plenty at Zilvermeer or in the Hidrodoe water activity centre .

Fancy a nice weekend away? Spend time with your family, dive into nature, or have yourselves comprehensively pampered? In the Kempen it's all possible. A mixture of beautiful greenery, lots of fun and numerous attractive lodging addresses will make your stay particularly pleasant.

Play

On Kempen's typical sandy soil you will find a lot of golf courses, generally playable all year round. Golfing on the heaths, on peat, or between the pines in one of the warmest spots in Flanders, that's living!

Near Antwerp, on the Kempen borders you will find one of Flanders’ biggest golf clubs: Rinkven Golf & Country Club. The challenging 9-hole course at Brasschaat Open Golf & Country Club is also nearby, together with the oldest golf club in the country: the prestigious Royal Antwerp Golf Club in Kapellen.

In the municipality of Ranst, in the so-called Land of Playsantiën, you will find Cleydael Golf Centre Ranst, ideal for novice golfers, and Bossenstein Golf & Polo Club, its 18 holes set around the magnificent castle.

In the north, near the border with the Netherlands, there are Sportclub Taxandria in Turnhout and the four Mol golf clubs: Steenhoven Golf & Country Club, Golf Club Nuclea Mol and the Kempense Golf Club with its golf school, the International Golf Training Center.

Finally, in the heart of the Kempen you can play at the Lille Golf & Country or at Golf Club Witbos, with 13 holes in an old military base.
